anyway, even with the minimal context he has for any of this, it's not hard to understand what's going on. despite appearances, this "madam" has such forden vibes it's not even funny.

No. Not unless you count Iris leaving the Tower, but that's only made her more frantic to find him again.

He's not out of the woods yet, but... he's safe from Madam, for now. As long as I can find him before she does.

[ that thought sends a little flare of alarm through laurence, even if he knows something has to be done about her. it still feels so impossible to stand against her. not just because an iris's powers, but because she's been the highest authority he's known for most of his life. ]

I know it doesn't mean much, but that's the only time she's ever done something like that. She's hit Iris before, like slapped him or something, but never that. Most of the time she doesn't use her powers any more than the rest of us. I don't think she really needs to.

Doesn't need to 'cause she's doing a fine job of ruling by fear already if she's showing everyone she's willing to do that to her own kid.

Is it only within that community that she has such high standing, or is it— well, I guess I don't really have any idea how big your larger society actually is. But outside the Tower, like.

...I mean it when I say she'd never done it before. I never knew until then that an Iris's powers could work like that. [ hurting someone else like that... ] Iris - her son. He never used his that way.

I don't know a ton about how the world is outside of the Tower - just what they told us when we were growing up, or what Ven and Ms. Needle have said since I started working with them. If what they said is true, at least some people outside know what Madam's been doing. Selling demiflora parts and stuff, not - hurting Iris like that. I'm not sure how many people even knew he existed before recently.
